So, you’ve set your sights on the iconic Burberry trench coat—a timeless investment piece that exudes sophistication. But the big question remains: Chelsea, Kensington or Gabardine?

For many of us, spending $2,000 to $3,000 on a coat warrants careful consideration. After all, this isn’t just any outerwear—it’s a statement of style and quality. You could order multiple Burberry trench styles, hoping to find the perfect fit, but who has the time for that? Let’s dive into the details and find your perfect match.

Fit and Silhouette:

  • The Chelsea cinches at the waist, creating a tailored, feminine silhouette.

  • Its arms are more narrow and fitted, making it ideal for layering over thin blouses or sleeveless dresses without bulkiness.

  • Petite individuals or those with narrow shoulders will appreciate this style.

Length Options:

  • Like its counterpart, the Kensington, the Chelsea comes in three lengths: short, mid, and long.

  • Pictured here is the mid length, measuring 37.4 inches (95 cm) from shoulder to hem.

  • This medium length works well for shorter individuals or those who prefer to wear it primarily with flat shoes.

Style Vibes:

  • If you’re after a trench that exudes traditional, formal, and feminine vibes, the Chelsea is your go-to choice.

Fit and Silhouette

  • The Kensington fits straight from the shoulders through the hips, creating a more masculine feel, reminiscent of its military roots.

  • When buttoned it feels comfortable enough to sit, and layers nicely over sweaters.

Length Options:

  • The Kensington also offers short, mid, and long lengths.

  • Pictured here is the long length, measuring 41.3 inches (105 cm).

  • If you’re a fan of heels or enjoy a dramatic look, this longer length is a great choice.

Style Vibes:

  • The Kensington features a classic, straight cut.

  • It’s perfect for those who prefer a more relaxed fit and timeless elegance.

Fit and Silhouette:

  • The Gabardine style stands out—it runs very oversized.

  • Even in my usual 8UK size, I still have plenty of room.

  • A raglan sleeve, which has no seam at the top of the sleeve, contributes to a relaxed and casual silhouette.

Length Options:

  • Pictured here is the short version (33.5 inches or 85 cm).

  • The Gabardine also comes in long and cropped lengths.

  • This shorter length is ideal for people who are frequently on the move or primarily travel by car.

Style Vibes:

  • Unlike the Chelsea and Kensington, the Gabardine belt skips the traditional D-rings. Some may prefer this modern twist.

  • This style is for those that like the look of a trench but want something less dressy and less tailored.

Choosing Your Size

  • I’m 5’5" and typically wear a 26 in jeans and 2/4 in dresses.

  • When buying European designer pieces, I usually size up.

  • According to Burberry’s size chart, an 8UK is comparable to a 6US—so consider sizing up accordingly.

  • I took an 8UK in each style and feel the Chelsea runs small, the Kensington runs true to size, and the Gabardine runs big.

Is it worth the cost?

While the price tag may raise eyebrows, consider this:

  • Burberry trench coats are made from 100% cotton gabardine, known for its water-resistant properties.

  • They’re not technically “waterproof,” but they hold up well even in downpours.

  • Burberry offers a “trench refresh” service to maintain waterproofing over time.

  • Each coat is fully lined in their iconic check print.

  • The seams and buttons are all very well crafted, so you'll have it for many years!

In the end, it’s about finding the style and length that suits you best. Whether you’re striding through the streets like a boss or simply enjoying a cool day, a well-tailored Burberry trench coat is a wardrobe staple that you’ll cherish for years to come!
